Tanzania’s High Commission in the UK to host the first Young Diaspora Youth Conference

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s High Commission in the UK is to host the first Young Diaspora Youth Conference in a renewed effort to inspire the second-generation diaspora to contribute to the development of their country.

The High Commissioner, Ambassador Mbelwa Kairuki made the announcement yesterday via social media, saying the conference, to be held online, is slated for May 5 this year.

“The Conference objective is to inspire the second-generation diaspora to contribute to the development of their country through their skills, education, and familiarity with various global issues,” he said.

He further explained that the meeting will provide an opportunity for the Young Diaspora to learn about opportunities available in Tanzania and about the country’s development vision and their role in it.

Ambassador Kairuki emphasized that in the future, African countries stand to gain more from their diaspora in terms of knowledge, expertise, and direct investment than remittance because most second- and third-generation diaspora do not have strong connections with their families back home as it is with their parents.

He gave an example of how Tanzania is currently benefiting from the second-generation African diaspora working in London’s premier institutions such as the London Stock Exchange (LSE), British International Investment (BII), Citi Bank, National Health Service (NHS) and several hospitals and universities.
