Jamshid bin Abdullah, the last Sultan of Zanzibar before the January 1964 Revolution, has passed away in Oman at the age of 95. According to BBC, Jamshid, who died on the evening of Monday, 30 December 2024, in hospital following a prolonged illness and advanced age, is expected to be buried today, Tuesday, at the Royal Cemetery in Muscat, Oman.
Born in Zanzibar on 16 September 1929, Jamshid received his primary education on the islands before continuing his studies in Egypt and later in the United Kingdom, where he served for two years in the British Royal Navy.
He ascended to the sultanate on 1 July 1963, following the death of his father, Sultan Abdullah bin Khalifa.
His reign lasted only six months before the Revolution of 12 January 1964 brought an end to the monarchy in Zanzibar and saw Abeid Amani Karume elected as the first President of Zanzibar.
