Dar es Salaam. As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape global economies, Africa is seizing the opportunity to lead with a human-centred approach to innovation.
The former chief business officer at Google’s X, Mr Mo Gawdatstated, said AI should serve the greater good, promoting growth and global change.
His remarks served as a rallying cry for responsible AI, urging Africa to take charge of the global shift toward technologies that uplift humanity.
“We need the world to fully understand the possibilities of AI before it is too late. This is a pivotal moment for Africa, as we stand at a point of advantage,” he said.
Mr Gawdat elaborated that Africa has the responsibility to enhance its capabilities in partnership with AI in a way that yields a net benefit for the continent.
Responsible AI is not just about technology; it is about shaping a future where innovation elevates every individual, protects our rights, and drives sustainable progress.
He made these comments after the Future Ready Summit, held in Dar es Salaam. The event was co-hosted by Vodacom Tanzania, the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (Costec), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The summit gathered technologists, policymakers, and youth from across the continent to explore AI’s potential to drive inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development not only in Africa but around the world.
Mr Phillip Besiimire, Managing Director of Vodacom Tanzania, emphasized the company’s commitment to human-centred innovation.
“AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution but a powerful enabler when tailored to local realities. Through strategic infrastructure investments, partnerships, and innovation, Vodacom is helping Tanzania overcome traditional development barriers,” he said.
According to him, advancing AI-enabled financial inclusion, smart agriculture, and resilient connectivity will contribute to a future where technology fosters equitable growth, empowering Tanzanians to thrive in a digital economy.Continue Reading
